♣ New Mexico author & Bubonicon friend Betsy James returns to talk about her new novel – Practicing To Be Lightning.

β™₯ Plus we’ll have our club officer elections for moderator, alternator and executive secretary for 2027, delayed from last month as Craig C. was in the hospital…

First up, Betsy James talks on Practicing To Be Lightning:Β  “For Ben, reality is crumbling…Β  Pursued by a whistling killer through flash flood, rockfall, and storm, under a sky where even the stars have gone mad, skeptical scientist Ben and intuitive Zuni artist Trace flee across an uncanny desert wasteland, fighting to climb what is surely a mountain β€” or is it a cloud?Β  Ben thinks he’s the rescuer…until he isn’t.Β  Trace has a GPS…kind of.Β  But lovers and nightmares hunt them on the paths of their very neurons.Β  Prisoners of a disastrous past, can they escape?Β  Does anyone ever escape?Β  On an ancient Earth where the land itself is alive, Practicing to Be Lightning plunges you into a terrifying quest where the lines between reality and imagination blur, and survival means confronting not just raw nature, but the wilderness of the soul.”

James, writer – artist, and desert hiker – is the author-illustrator of many books for adults, young adults, and children.Β  Her novel, Roadsouls, was a finalist for the World Fantasy Award.Β  With a special interest in worldviews and overlapping cultures, she has led writing workshops internationally and with New Mexico’ s indigenous peoples.Β  She teaches writing in University of New Mexico Honors College, paints in watercolor and gouache, hikes in the desert Southwest, and grows garlic in Albuquerque’ s North Valley.

After James is done, we’ll have our annual Club Officer Elections!
