The American Society of Magical Negroes – a 2024 satirical fantasy film – at the Guild Cinema Friday-Monday, May 17-20 – 3:45 & 8:00 pm!

Directed by Kobi Libii – 2024 – 104m.

A fresh, satirical comedy inspired by the “magical negro” cinematic trope popularized in American cinema and television throughout the 20th Century and first named and criticized by filmmaker Spike Lee.  Flipping the trope on its head, The American Society of Magical Negroes follows a young man, Aren, who is recruited into a secret society of magical Black people who dedicate their lives to a cause of utmost importance: making white people more comfortable.  Although initially enamored with his new powers, Aren begins to question the value of using supernatural means to do the very thing he’s felt obligated to do his whole life.

“An on-point comedy-fantasy.” – Abbie Bernstein, Assignment X

“The filmmakers do an excellent job of making the film funny and digestible for non-blacks while giving a nod to Blacks that they know what many Black folks have to go through each day. This film is far more than mundane and somewhat short of magical.” – Reginald Ponder, vocalo.org

The Guild Cinema is located at 3405 Central Ave NE in the Nob Hill area.
