Programming – Presentation on 75 Years of The Martian Chronicles from from Christopher Marsh.
Christopher Marsh talks on “75 years since Ray Bradbury’s book The Martian Chronicles was first published (back in 1950). This talk is a retrospective of the book discussing how it has held up over the years. The book is an amazing work of literature but the science wasn’t right even for 1950 and has mostly gotten worse. Now that we are closer to actually sending people to Mars is there any way the stories could be salvaged and brought up to date given what we now know about the Red Planet? I may go through the book story by story and discuss how they can be viewed today.”
Marsh is a retired electrical engineer who worked at NASA on various programs including the modernization of the visual system for the Space Shuttle Simulator and the requirements for the International Space Station. After NASA, Marsh worked on artificial intelligence, medical information systems and computer security. In the 1970s, he won several awards for short animated films he created. Now that he is retired, he has gone back to making animation as a hobby. He has ridden his bicycle across the United States five times, and is currently a park commissioner for the City of Rio Rancho.
