MARY ROBINETTE KOWAL & THREE OTHER AUTHORS AT BOOKS ON THE BOSQUE 5:30 PM THURSDAY, APRIL 23!

Colorado author Mary Robinette Kowal joins with Marie Parks, Geoff Habiger and dave ring to celebrate their novels 5:30 pm Thursday, April 23, at Books on the Bosque!

In The Martian Contingency, Kowal returns to Mars in her 2025 Lady Astronaut novel — Years after a meteorite strike obliterated Washington, D.C. — triggering an extinction-level global warming event — Earth’s survivors have started an international effort to establish homes on space stations and the Moon.  The next step – Mars.  Elma York, the Lady Astronaut, lands on the Red Planet, optimistic about preparing for the first true wave of inhabitants.  The mission objective is more than just building the infrastructure of a habitat – they are trying to preserve the many cultures and nuances of life on Earth without importing the hate.  But from the moment she arrives, something is off.

In Flightless, Parks focuses on Riff, a disgraced, low-class thief.  All of his hopes hinge on Ascension, so he can rejoin the elite, upper-class thieves guild he belonged to as a youth.  When he’s offered a rare, lucrative job to steal an artifact and prove himself to the guild, there’s no question he’ll take it.  But his crewmates grow skittish, and one of his usuals refuses to join the operation, making Riff wonder what they know that he doesn’t.  As his crew prepares, they face sabotage and betrayal.  The only way out is forward, because the artifact is their sole bargaining chip.  Riff must discover how far he’s willing to go to improve his station and confront his ambitions.  This job has the potential to fulfill all his dreams… or end his career.

Habiger’s Flint Dagger: Dr. Gnoll Book 1 is described as such: “The name is Dagger. Flint Dagger.  As codename Quartz, an agent of M.O.U.N.T.A.I.N. (the Ministry of Unorthodox Natural Talents and Information-Nabbing), I’m regularly tasked with the most difficult, world-saving assignments, which I always complete with grace and panache.  (And successfully, I might add. Is the world still here? You’re welcome.)  My latest mission briefing from “D”: The nefarious Dr. Gnoll is building a machine that will give him power over all magic on Ados.  Unfortunately, both a rival agent – Maxine Charisma (don’t smirk at me like that) – and Dr. Gnoll’s henchgnolls are already en route to the location of the MacGuffin Rod, an artifact that Dr. Gnoll needs to complete his plans.”

And in ring’s 2021 novella, The Hidden Ones – We are tuath.  We are the hidden people.  In Eire, our lives and deeds are behind every story of the fair folk, the sidhe, or faerie.  Behind all the old tales, warped and bent by history, is one of us.  But what happens when a myth-made-flesh no longer merits legends?  What happens when he falls from grace?

Kowal is the author of the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Award-winning alternate history novel, The Calculating Stars, the first book in the Lady Astronaut series.  She is also the author of The Glamourist Histories series and Ghost Talkers and has received the Astounding Award for Best New Writer, four Hugo Awards, the Nebula, and Locus Awards.  Her stories appear in Asimov’s, Uncanny, and several Year’s Best anthologies.  Mary Robinette has also worked as a professional puppeteer, is a member of the Award-winning podcast Writing Excuses, and performs as a voice actor (SAG/AFTRA), recording fiction for authors including Seanan McGuire, Cory Doctorow, and Neal Stephenson.  She lives in Colorado with her husband Rob and over a dozen manual typewriters.

Parks is an LGBTQIA+ fantasy author who won the New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards for best LGBTQ book for her co-authored debut, Unrelenting, in 2022 and was a finalist for the Futurescapes Award for Most Promising New Author.  Additionally, she was a finalist for the Book Pipeline Unpublished Contest.  She lives in New Mexico, where she founded Sandia Starforgers retreats for writers. She enjoys hiking, camping, and eating green chile.

Habiger is a writer of fantasy, science fiction, and speculative fiction. He has co-authored several award-winning novels with Coy Kissee and his short stories have been featured in SciFi Lampoon, the Space Cowboy Books podcast Simultaneous Times, and other publications. He currently lives in the mountains east of Albuquerque with his wife and two cats.

ring is a queer writer of speculative fiction living in Washington, DC.  He is also the publisher and managing editor of Neon Hemlock Press, and the co-editor of Baffling Magazine.  His short fiction has been featured in publications including Fireside Fiction, Podcastle, and A Punk Rock Future.
